Britain’s most successful female jockey comes out of retirement to ride in Greece
Hayley Turner, the most successful female jockey in British racing history, will be the star attraction at Markopoulos Racecourse, near Athens, as she returns to the saddle in a special one-off appearance on Thursday, April 6.
Turner is one of the most famous faces in racing, after winning Group/Grade 1 races in the UK and US, raising a century of winners in a year, and being awarded an OBE from The Queen.
The 34-year-old will be in Greece to ride at the fixture and also promote British and Irish racing to the Greek racing fans.
She will be working on behalf of GBI Racing, the joint venture between Racing UK and At The Races which packages and broadcasts British and Irish racing to betting outlets in around 40 countries.
Turner said: “I am excited by the opportunity to try something completely new by riding at Markopoulos. It is the second time I have been to the course, but the first time was only in a watching capacity. It will be a challenge and hopefully I can meet it!
My role as GBI Racing ambassador enables me to promote our racing to established and new audiences and hopefully help generate interest in GBI Racing, which generates good money for our sport.
GBI Racing Marketing Director, Clive Cottrell, added: “Hayley visited Markopoulos in October on behalf of GBI Racing and was an instant hit. All the national TV stations and newspapers covered her appearance and she was something of a celebrity out there.
“GBI Racing’s relationship with Horse Races, the company member of the OPAP Group, which holds the exclusive rights to organize and conduct horse races and related betting in Greece, is thriving. Our racing is now in around 1,000 betting outlets, and Hayley has definitely contributed to the success of the partnership.”
